Dependency Ratio - Number of the population that fit into the definition of a child (0-14) and Elderly (65+) both male and female divided by the number of adults (15-64) both male and female to create a percentage that is the population of children and elderly that are dependent on the adult population for economic needs.
Old Age Dependency Ratio – Similar to Dependency Ratio except this refers only to the elderly population defined as (65+) male and female divided by the adult population (15-64), male and female. This creates a percentage of elderly population that is dependent on the adult population. A higher number means that there is more elderly than adult in that particular area.
Aboriginal Population - Refers to those persons who reported identifying with at least one Aboriginal group, i.e. North American Indian, Métis or Inuit (Eskimo), and/or those who reported being a Treaty Indian or a Registered Indian as defined by the Indian Act of Canada and/or who were members of an Indian Band or First Nation. In 1991 and previous censuses, Aboriginal persons were determined using the ethnic origin question (ancestry).
Immigrant Population - Refers to people who are, or have been, landed immigrants in Canada. A landed immigrant is a person who has been granted the right to live in Canada permanently by immigration authorities. Some immigrants have resided in Canada for a number of years, while others have arrived recently. Most immigrants are born outside Canada, but a small number were born in Canada.
Visible Minority Population - Refers to the visible minority group to which the respondent belongs. The Employment Equity Act defines visible minorities as persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour.
